To operate you simply position the material to be drilled then pull the lever forward. This motion supplies air to the clamping cylinder that automatically adjusts to the thickness of the material as well activating the 3/4hp motor. The drill stroke is finished by continuing to pull on the lever and then returning it to the home position to cut the air supply.
